Weekend Update

I am no longer very sick, but have completely lost my appetite. Anything other than mango sorbet makes me want to die. In spite of this, I have had a lovely weekend. On Thursday, we hit the echolocation launch, which was well attended and good fun. I was sorry not to have been feeling more alive. Friday, we had a Prose Board meeting, selected four stories from 79 and I am thrilled with what we chose. I also got to send out the acceptances, which was quite cool because I knew they’d be making a day or two. Friday night was Stuart’s birthday party in Chinatown, and we had to squeeze twelve around the table and it was unfortunate that I’d gone off food because the food was wonderful. I was content with my chickenballs. And so lovely to see so many friends at once. Yesterday, I had lunch with my dear dear Paul, who is in town for just a few days. We had a brilliant time, and I was excited to hear about his upcoming adventure: he’s going traveling in Asia for six months come January. Last night Stuart and I went to his birthday fete down on Queen Street, and we had a very nice time, and it was a perfect night for walking anyway. And now it is Sunday and I am doing schoolwork, etc. and hopefully I will feel good about what I have accomplished by the end of the day. I also feel like baking peanut butter cookies. So perhaps I will.

After Words

Da Vinci Code was abandoned after thirty pages because it seemed too long and uncompelling to finish. If it were the last book on earth, however, I’d definitely read to the end. I am tired/hung over as to be incoherent. In this sort of mood, I giggle a lot and Stuart seems like a comedy genius. Because he is. We’ve had a brilliant whirlwind of a weekend and it was wonderful to be a part of it. Wedding was beautiful, bride was stunning, groom handsome, weather was fine, fun was had, company was nice, food was good, husband was danced with, party was excellent and indeed, the whole thing was a sweet dream and I’ll remember it for the rest of my life. There is nothing better than seeing your friend with somebody so perfect for her.

The only fairy tale element absent was the horse and buggy. Katie was forbidden one, because of P. Bernardo’s strictly early 90s wedding.

Wedding Weekend

Here for five women writers revealing their inspiration. The Beatles mash themselves up. The danger of naming a character. Books banned in Iran. Etc.

This weekend I am reading The Da Vinci Code. It’s true, but only because I am going to be maniacally busy this weekend with some blocks of sitting around time and require a novel that won’t require too much concentration and that can be finished for Monday so I can read the books I have to read for school. The qualification is necessary. 8 billion readers can’t be wrong though. Or can they?

This weekend is brought to us by the Doering/Lui Nuptials, which I expect will usurp these as the wedding of the year. A three day extravaganza really, and if you’re looking for me I’ll be the one riding around in a limo wearing a floor-length gown. A floor-length gown that doesn’t exactly fit. Ah yes, my career as a bridesmaid begins this afternoon, straight through to Sunday. I’ll be back in the aftermath, probably with pictures.

Loy Kratong

It was two years ago right now in Thailand that Stuart and I had the pleasure of befriending Carolyn (and here we are the morning after, at the airport in Chiang Mai). With great pleasure, last night we went out with Carolyn to Thai Basil to celebrate Loy Kratong for the third year in a row. An absolutely perfect meal and company just as good. Loy Kratong celebrations will continue on a more subdued level for the rest of the weekend, however, as I have so much work to do (and a Scrabble tourney tomorrow night!). Today’s exertion will involve a DVD rental at the most, I suppose. Oh, and The Emperor’s Children has of late become unputdownable.

Mochi sick

I thought Leah McLaren used her platform for good this week. On orgies of prizes. And the Hungarian Revolution is all over the news.

This weekend has been quiet and rainy, and I’ve been working all day since I woke up this morn. None of this bodes well for an interesting summation, but we did have sushi yesterday and it was delicious. Afterwards, we went to the Korean grocery store and got meron pan, Japanese curry and so much mochi we made ourselves sick. Friday night our basement neighbour woke us up at 4:30 screaming and crying. I could tell you more, but it only gets duller. Such is life, at the mo.

Go your own way

Britt slept over Friday night, and Saturday morning we awoke bright an early to be in the audience at the live-taping of Go at the CBC, which was enormously fun and also means I’ve now said the word “sex” on national radio (not my choice; it was the question they gave me!). I spent the afternoon reading the newspaper, napping and devouring an enthralling novel (see below) that got me into such a state of Britishness after reading an account of afternoon tea at the Orchard Tea Rooms in Granchester, I ended up baking scones at 8:00 on Saturday night (and they were good!). Today’s highlight was a trip to Riverdale Farm (with a looong walk there and back), and it was excellent as usual and the lambs have become large.

Autumnally Brazen

We’ve had a wonderful Thanksgiving in Peterborough. We baked three apple pies, ate too much turkey, saw friends oldest and bestest, drank too much wine, felt sick, went for a drive, went for a walk, enjoyed the sunshine, enjoyed my mom, and spent a weekend that isn’t even finished yet.

Dip Surfeit

Oh, a most pleasant weekend has been mine. I met with Katie on Friday evening so she could assist me in a shoe shop; I needed black heels to accompany my bridesmaid’s dress for her upcoming wedding. I got a pair I adore, and then we shared a dessert, and had a wonderful while together. Last night, we had a small gathering at ours, and I was in a determinedly hostessy state of mind and cooked for four hours in preparation. Unfortunately, I’m not a brilliant hostess and it was too late when I realized that my menu consisted of various dips and dippers, which hardly constitutes variety, no matter how scrumptious my roasted red pepper/white bean dip was. So I made mini bruschetta-like pizzas, and cupcakes too, and drank enough wine that I forgot to worry about it. Topic of the evening focussed mainly upon what must have been going on back in Gomorrah. Sodom- pretty straight-forward- but I can’t imagine what they must have got up to down in G-Town. I missed Nuit Blanche, but that’s because I couldn’t figure out what it was. And now we’re about to embark upon an autumnal walk. It’s not raining at the mo, which is strange for a Sunday.

Nick Hornby on public reading. Belinda likes sex.

I’ve displayed excellent restraint this weekend, and have saved myself from the Victoria College Booksale. I am going tomorrow, which is half-price day, and then I can spend spend spend without a hint of remorse.
