Peppermint Twist
It was with real pleasure that I received the latest issue of The New Quarterly in the post today, containing my very own story “The New Peppermint”. Should you wish to purchase a copy of the magazine yourself, here for where it can be found on the newsstands. It’s a beautiful issue, redesigned and so rewardingly. Also contains a piece by Elizabeth Hay, and you can imagine that for me to be published alongside her is a tremendous honour considering the way I feel about her latest novel Late Nights on Air. So obviously I am pleased as a writer, and as a reader I can’t wait to get down to reading the whole issue through.

False Prophets
Now reading The Golden Notebook, on the back of a bandwagon. My reading is informed by essays on Lessing by Joan Didion and Heather Mallick, each from an opposing point of view. (I wonder what Mallick thinks now of her essay “Lessing is More” having been subtitled “Why Doris Lessing won’t win the Nobel Prize for Literature”, though the subtitle seems to be the only thing she got wrong in the entire piece).
Also now reading Margaret Atwood’s new collection of poetry The Door which is wonderful.
Finally, my first post “Encounters with Books” is now up at the Descant blog. A few bugs still need to be worked out over there, but I hope you’ll check my piece out, and that you enjoy it.

Second, www.echolocation.ca has been overhauled and the site looks really excellent.
Third, I am the new prose editor of echolocation, beginning with the next issue. We are now accepting submissions and naturally, I am really after some quality prose. See submission details.
And finally, I’ll be at Word on the Street on Sunday. Come to buy back issues, to subscribe, and to pick up your complimentary bookmark.

Wknd
My story A Big Enough Army won second place in the 2006 Toronto Star Short Story contest, and is online today!
We’re in Peterborough this weekend, and I met up with friends today who I hadn’t seen in years, from when I used to be a delinquent. And in the most exciting news of all, the most wonderfully bookish woman alive (my friend Bronwyn) is getting married. Oh how the tears have been flowing. I am slowly regaining self-control.

That Hollywood Girl
Sometimes, truly remarkable days come along and just douse one in blessings.
First, my story “Slush Puppy” won First Prize in the Hart House Review Literary Contest! You can pick up a copy of the Hart House Review at Hart House. It’s a beautiful issue.
Second, I went to my new job this morning just for an informal session and things there are more wonderful than I ever imagined. I feel incredibly fortunate to have got this position. It’s going to be a great way to spend the summer.
Third, even though my new job requires relatively informal attire, I went shopping today and spend about $300 on summer clothes and such. Specifying the amount is tacky I realise, and it might not seem like much to some, but if you know how little Stu and I have been living off of for the past year, you will understand why blowing $300 was such a pleasure.
And fourth, well, pictures speak louder than words. Here is a photo of a dream come true.
Oh, and welcome welcome summer!
