Mixing the new Legos into your gender-neutral set is very smart, and I love the hair/hat swap.
If you want to add to your set, Ebay is a good way to get old Legos and pick the pieces you want. I used to do that when my son was little and the gendered toy aisles made me crazy — I found a house for his Little People that wasn’t sparkly pink (they used to make toy houses in blue and brown, and all the kids used them), and old superhero toys that included Wonder Woman and Batgirl and other female Justice League folks, and that sort of thing. And also things like a Sit’n’Spin that predated the addition of flashing lights and tinny music.
