Babyish
Yesterday I became obsessed with the word “babyish” after it dawned on me that I hadn’t said it in about twenty years. When it used to carry real force, but now it floats like a bubble. I found it amusing that the dictionary says a synonym for “babyish” is “puerile”, just because someone who said “puerile” would probably manage to impress me with their vocab, and yet in essence they would just be pronouncing things “babyish”. Which, really, is quite immature.
The most lovely word I’ve learned all day (thanks to Drabble, my vocab instructor) is empyrean.
Have you tried the cookbook yet? I made a frittata last night using mine again, and once again, it’s seriously delicious. I prefer cooking vegetarian as well, and going for meat when I’m eating out because that way I can try new things.
Some critical analyses you might enjoy are books by Coral Howells. She was one of my professors at Reading and is an Atwood expert in particular and an authority on Canadian literature in general.
P.S. The other day I found a recording of Avril Lavigne covering “The Scientist.” How ridiculously fabulous is that?
I’ve read Howells actually– the last paper I did for my Masters was on Atwood’s Cat’s Eye. How exciting that she was one of your profs! You’ve had quite the education indeed.
Did you know that Stuart and I saw Avril at a music festival in Osaka? As well as The Go-Gos?
