The Art of Blogging begins again…

the-art-of-blogging

My very favourite part of my blogging course is week 6ish when we talk about what blogging has to do with cake, getting lost, Maira Kalman’s The Principles of Uncertainty, and hope in the darkness. If you care to take a crash course, you can do so here, but if you feel like joining us, I’m pleased to let you know that The Art of Blogging starts on October 3 and runs until the end of November at the University of Toronto’s School of Continuing Studies. You can register now, and I do hope some of you can make it.

Register online.

The Art of Blogging starts October 5.

learn0moreMy course, The Art of Blogging, starts October 5 at the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies. Our last session was fun and inspiring, and I’m really excited about doing it again. You can learn more about my approach to teaching blogging here.

And the following is some of the feedback I received on my previous course evaluation, just to give you a sense of what you can expect from The Art of Blogging:

“I really enjoyed how Kerry tied the art of blogging to other art forms—literature, visual art, etc—and encouraged us to see blogging as part of a larger context. Was engaging and thought-provoking.”

“This course was exactly what I needed to get going with my blog.”

“A worthwhile course! I would recommend it to those who want to learn about blogging and all it encompasses.”

“Excellent! Very enjoyable learning experience.”

“I think Kerry did an excellent job of encouraging our individual voices and maintaining a respectful and productive learning environment. Loved the class—thanks, Kerry!”

I teach The Art and Business of Blogging at the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies, and the next session starts on October 2, running for 9 weeks. Here’s the syllabus from last year, if you want an idea of what we’ll be working on. I’m looking forward to it and hoping for a big class of enthusiastic and inquisitive students. Please do spread the word!

Blogging course makes the news

Much of this Fall was consumed by the adventure my first round of teaching The Art and Business of Blogging at through UofT’s School of Continuing Studies. An article on the course was included in The Toronto Sun‘s recent continuing education supplement, and is available for your reading here. And just a reminder that the course will be offered again in the spring!

My blogging course starts in 3 weeks!

I was supposed to begin teaching The Art and Business of Blogging in the spring, but we did not get the numbers required for the course to proceed. And so I’ve been somewhat nervous as the fall start date has drawn closer, trying to achieve the unlikely balance of not getting my hopes up but also getting the course prepared. It was my pleasure then today to discover that we’re just one body short of a class at the moment, and there are three weeks left before the course starts. I’ve got a good feeling about this, am so looking forward to the course, but wanted to put the word out there for anyone who’s interested that you can register today.

We’ll be covering the basics of blogging how-tos, but using this as a platform to take on the bigger questions– what’s a blog for, what are its unique capabilities, how do you make it worth your time, how do you make some money from it, what are the ethical questions involved, what is involved in blogging well, and how can you create a blog that you’ll be comfortable with taking into the wide open future.

UPDATE: Course is on! I’m so excited. But there’s still room for you…

Registration deadline fast approaching

One more time: the registration deadline is fast approaching for my course The Art and Business of Blogging at the University of Toronto’s School of Continuing Studies. Caveat that blogging is more art than business anyway, but it is an art, and therefore worth studying. And we’ll get to the business angle too. I am looking forward to it, and hope to learn a lot as well over the next couple of months.

Three remarkable things

1) I’m quite excited about the YOSS Manifesto, which went live today on a spiffy new website rigged up by my favourite outfit, Create Me This. It’s a wonderful celebration of the short story form, and I couldn’t think of a better year to dedicate to short stories with so many stellar collections coming out.

2) My course is starting in a few weeks! Sign up for The Art and Business of Blogging at the University of Toronto’s School of Continuing Studies. I am in the midst of planning, and things are turning out marvelously.

3) We’ve got a tie for the Canada Reads Independently popular poll. Somebody break it, please? Email me your top pick of this year’s selections (even if you haven’t read them all…).

Course Offering: The Art and Business of Blogging

I am very excited to announce that I’ll be teaching the course “The Art and Business of Blogging” at the University of Toronto’s School of Continuing Studies in the spring. The course runs from April 11-June 13, and will explore the various uses of blogging, the blog as community builder and as a tool for promotion, the blogging gamut from Dooce to Gizmodo, the importance of storytelling in blogging, how to craft an excellent blog post, and the technical aspects of the blog. Among other things, syllabus still being under construction. Anyway, the course is still a while away so I’ll be mentioning it again in the next few months, but I just wanted to get the word out now, mostly because I’m thrilled about it.
