Pickle Me This

This cake is for the party…

We decided that a six-layer cake needed a bit more height, so we put it on a pedestal and added cake bunting. It was delicious. Only problem was that one slice fed all our party guests, so now we’re looking for some other parties for this cake to be for.

(I stole this idea from here, just in case you’ve mistaken me for someone original. And her cake wasn’t crooked. But then her philosophy also probably isn’t, “Bake a cake, but bake it slant.”)

Oh my – that looks fabulous! And yes, I do see how it might feed a LOT of people!

  2. patricia says:

SO beautiful. I hope we can entice you to bake another one of these gems for some future Vicious Circle gathering…

  3. Julia says:

WOW!! The cake looks even better in its slant version.

  4. Melwyk says:

That is so pretty! And I think that’s the best cake philosophy to have 🙂

  5. Alyssa says:

Wow! And the layers look so even. Very impressive.

  6. Kristin says:

So gorgeous. I saw it on Make it Lovely too and briefly entertained the thought of making it for Emma’s 2nd birthday in July. I have a feeling my attempt will not be nearly as nice as yours. Maybe I can get my mom to do it!

THIS. is amazing. though it will do nothing to help convince me, which still needs to happen despite being into my fourth decade, that crayons are not actually edible. because this cake obviously argues against that boring belief.

    1. Kerry says:

Believe it or not, cake did not taste the least bit waxy! But it did taste like a rainbow…

I’m making this cake tomorrow thanks to your inspiring photo! Quick question: did you use a single recipe to get the layers nice and thick like that or did you double it??

    1. Kerry says:

I would be wary of following any of my leads baking wise. Do NOT double this recipe, or you’ll be eating cake forever. My cake is so thick because I don’t follow recipes properly and used pans that were a bit smaller than the 9 inches. Thinner cakes would have been better to stack the cake, and to cut and eat it. Also, I didn’t use the icing recipe from the Martha Stewart recipe– it had too many eggs for my liking. The icing recipe I used didn’t work though, so can’t recommend that one either! Let me know how your cake turns out… Good luck! It’s also quite delicious– just make sure you have plenty of people to eat it.

  9. Lindsay says:

Thanks for the fast reply! I’m making 2 cakes and was thinking that if the layers are as thick as yours I could just halve them…risky I know. We have 12 people for both parties that the cakes will be the star of so we should have no problem with the consumption issue. I’ll let you know how it goes!

    1. Kerry says:

Oh, if you don’t have the food colouring gels (I didn’t), here is a recipe that tells you how many food colouring drops to use: http://thespruetamer.blogspot.com/2011/04/gluten-free-rainbow-cake.html Yes, kind of ridiculous, but it worked, and what’s the point of a rainbow if it’s not vivid??
