Good news about bedtime reading

Though I’m not sure I qualify as a “busy parent”*, I am excited that Harriet and I appear (with a picture!) in this lovely piece by Andrea Gordon  in The Toronto Star about bedtime reading. The article was written in response to a recent study showing that 88% of parents with kids under twelve read regularly to their children at bedtime. Which is good news, in addition to the news that all of us knew already– that bedtime reading is one of parenthood’s great pleasures.

*I am not being self-deprecating. Most of this morning has been spent either in a slanket or lying on the floor.

How WONDERFUL!! What a beautiful photo. Great article, too.

  2. This is the best gift we can give our children. Both my children love to “read” (4 1/2 & 3)with mommy every night. I love holding them close, as it seems to be the only time they aren’t in motion…

check out my blog about this at http://www.mykawartha.com/blog/post/808516–literature-for-the-busy-mom

Glad to see other moms are as passionate about reading.

Wow, that’s a surprising (in a good way) statistic that 88% of parents read to their children at night. I love reading to Nolan and each week he seems more and more interested in our reading time. I can’t wait until he reaches out and grabs the books and points to the pictures while I read.

How exciting!!! I love the picture 🙂

  6. What’s a “slanket”?

Just another part of my hectic lifestyle.

    Hello, Kerry,

I oft lurk on your blog; I’ve frequently typed this address, and before it your last, into my search bar in the two years since my father’s partner, Shirley Semotok suggested I check it out, a recommendation she made two years ago over a birthday dinner at Allen’s on the Danforth.

I do concur: this is a lovely piece in The Star.

And: just before linking to Pickle Me This I read an interesting article about the very positive effect of reading to babies in the weeks before birth. The synchronicity prompted me to post the link, in the case it is of interest to you: http://psychcentral.com/blog/archives/2010/06/29/emotional-trauma-in-the-womb/

Thank you for keeping a blog as interesting as this.

Hi Sarah! Thank you for your comment and the link, and for coming back here time and again. Much, much appreciated. (And didn’t you intern at Descant? I recognized your last name in the masthead once upon a time…)

  8. Margaret's Dad says:

As an advocate for and a practitioner of ‘Horizontal Parenting’, I can say the benefits of “HP” shouldn’t be underestimated. Equip with a broom or golf club or a good sturdy stick a parent can do a great job looking after the youngin’… and get in some shut eye.

May I point out, when you google ‘horizontal parenting’ your articles are the first two results!!

    1. Kerry says:

Other than the golf club (totally not necessary), you’re completely right…

And I am excited to be establishing myself as the internet’s foremost hp expert.
